This website was developed because track season in Nebraska is CRAZY! Meets are always being cancelled, postponed, and rescheduled because of weather. Parents want to know which events their children are in and what time those events will take place so they can spend as much time as possible at work or in the field planting before they need to leave to watch their children. Teachers wanted to know how to plan lessons according to the track schedule since it involves over 40% of our students. My phone was ringing off the hook and text messages would flood my inbox with these questions and I knew I had to find a way to communicate better. Thus, the West Holt Track & Field website was developed.
I think it is an easy way to reach many people by typing one sentence. In the future I hope to have students help type the information such as results, because this will not get done until the end of the season. I learned that people will trust it is up-to-date and that it has to be a priority of mine to keep the information accurate.
A problem I encountered in the beginning was the school filter. When I began the website everything was fine. Then with tightened security the site was blocked and students couldn't access it and I couldn't update it at school. That was resolved with help from West Holt's Technology Administrator.
I promoted this site by making refrigerator magnets and handing them out at our parents meeting and to the athletes on the first day of track practice. I also put one in each teacher's school mailbox and I include the link with every track article I submit to our local newspaper.
